Unitarian Universalists are known for Social Justice and Social Action as a part of their religious commitment. The first two UU Principles speak to this as well as a long tradition of action and compassion toward those in need. In Chico, our small congregation is committed to doing what we can to support and give succor to our homeless population.

Torres Shelter Activities

This congregation, together with the fellow congregations of the Chico Interfaith Council, support the efforts of the Chico Community Shelter Partnership, the Torres Shelter, for Chico's homeless people. Our members help one Saturday per month by preparing and serving a nutritious meal.  Toiletries, canned goods and cleaning supplies are collected at the church for the use of the shelter and its clients.

Other activities

Esplanade House - In the past we have provided Christmas Dinner in a box for the families at the Esplanade House, a transitional facility serving families recovering from substance abuse and/or homelessness.

Tithe - We share 10% of the non-pledge receipts from the Offering Baskets passed during the Sunday service with local organizations. V.E.C.T.O.R.S., a group serving homeless veterans, was a major recipient in 2006. Currently our tithe is going to the Torres Shelter.

Chico Area Interfaith Council (CAIC) - We actively participate in this monthly gathering of representatives of Chico Churches.  Our Fellowship President is the voting member.  We are also represented by Corla Bertrand in her dual role as member of this church and Director of the Chico Community Shelter Partnership (Torres Shelter).

Besides the congregation's actions, members live their UU principles by volunteering in many community endeavors as individuals. Some of them are -
