Who are Unitarian Universalists ? We are a community of people with different beliefs and diverse backgrounds who embrace basic principles which include the freedom to engage in our own personal search for truth and meaning. We come together in the spirit of mutual caring and respect to celebrate life, offer service, and work for a better world. As Unitarian Universalists, we affirm the worth and dignity of every person: all ages, genders, ethnicities, sexual orientations, abilities, theological and political expressions, economic classes and educations. We embrace and encourage diversity, hoping all feel most welcome here. A brief history.......... The Unitarians are a very old denomination which began by believing in the Unity of God and rejecting the concept of the Trinity. Our Christian roots are in central Europe where an early king of Transylvania (later part of Romania and Hungary), King Sigusmund, was the first monarch on earth to proclaim that freedom of religious belief would prevail in his country in 1568. Unitarians migrated to America, bringing their ideas of freedom of religion to the foundations of the new country, the United States.
The Universalist movement began in the United States. Universalists believed that God is loving and therefore salvation would be for everyone (universal). Like the Unitarians, Universalists were active social reformers. They also shared values of tolerance and resisted having a creed.
In 1961, the Unitarians and the Universalists merged and formed the Unitarian Universalist Association. With the passing of time, UU's have become more liberal in their approach to spirituality. Talk of "salvation" and a "Father God" has virtually disappeared. UU's tend to rely upon reason and personal experience in deciding their beliefs.
